About the Sleep Calculator

A sleep calculator works out the best time to go to bed or wake up based on 90-minute sleep cycles, so you're more likely to wake up feeling rested instead of groggy in the middle of a deep sleep phase. You either pick a wake-up time and it suggests bedtimes, or pick a bedtime and it suggests wake-up times — both built around completing full sleep cycles rather than random hours.

Why This Tool Exists

Most people set an alarm without thinking about sleep cycles at all, which is exactly why waking up at 7 hours sometimes feels worse than waking up at 6. This tool exists because timing your sleep around 90-minute cycles genuinely makes a difference in how groggy or alert you feel when the alarm goes off.

How to Use It

  1. Step 1. Choose whether you want to set a wake-up time or a bedtime.
  2. Step 2. Enter the time you have in mind.
  3. Step 3. Click Calculate.
  4. Step 4. You'll get several options, each aligned to a full number of sleep cycles.

Key Features & Benefits

How It Works

Sleep happens in cycles of roughly 90 minutes, moving through light sleep, deep sleep, and REM. Waking up in the middle of deep sleep is what causes that heavy, groggy feeling, even if you technically slept enough hours. The calculator works backward or forward in 90-minute blocks — so if you need to wake up at 6:30 AM, it'll suggest going to bed around 9:00 PM, 10:30 PM, or midnight, each landing you at the end of a complete cycle instead of mid-cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does waking up mid-cycle feel worse?

Interrupting deep sleep causes grogginess known as sleep inertia, even if you got a decent number of total hours.

How long is one sleep cycle?

On average, a full sleep cycle lasts about 90 minutes, though this can vary slightly from person to person.

How many cycles should I aim for?

Most adults do well with 5-6 full cycles a night, which works out to roughly 7.5-9 hours of sleep.

Does this account for time to fall asleep?

Yes, the calculator adds an average of about 15 minutes to fall asleep when suggesting bedtimes.

Can I use this for naps too?

It's designed mainly for full nighttime sleep planning, though a single 90-minute cycle also works well for a full nap.
