Percentages in Everyday Life

Percentages show up everywhere — a 10% restaurant tip, a 30% off sale, your exam score, a salary raise negotiation, tax on a purchase. The math isn't hard, but doing it mentally is annoying. This calculator handles all four common situations.

Common mistake: A $120 item with 20% off — most people subtract 20 from 120 and get $100. Wrong. The answer is $96. Use the Add / Subtract % tab to get it right, every time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find 20% of a number?

Use the % of a Number tab. Enter 20 in the percentage field and your number in the second field. Click Calculate. For example, 20% of 5,000 = 1,000.

How do I calculate my exam score as a percentage?

Use What % is X of Y? Enter your obtained marks as X and total marks as Y. If you scored 412 out of 500, your percentage is 82.4%.

How do I find the percentage increase in my salary?

Use % Change. Enter your old salary as the first value and new salary as the second. The calculator shows the exact percentage increase.

How do I add tax or GST to a price?

Use Add / Subtract %. Enter the original price, select "Add", and enter the tax rate. You'll see the final price with tax included and the tax amount separately.

Can I use decimal percentages like 7.5% or 12.25%?

Yes. All four modes accept decimal inputs and calculate accurately without rounding errors.

What is the difference between percentage increase and percentage change?

They're the same thing. Percentage change covers both — a positive result means an increase, a negative result means a decrease.
