Calculate your free margin
A margin calculator tells you exactly how much capital you need to set aside to open a leveraged trading position, based on your position size, leverage, and the asset's price. Instead of guessing whether you have enough free margin for a trade, enter your numbers and see the required margin instantly.
Getting caught with insufficient margin mid-trade, or worse, hitting a margin call, is a frustrating and avoidable problem. This tool exists so you know exactly how much of your account balance a trade will tie up before you actually place it.
Required margin is calculated as Position Size ÷ Leverage. So a $50,000 position at 50x leverage requires just $1,000 in margin, while the same position at 10x leverage would require $5,000. Understanding this relationship helps you plan how many trades you can realistically run at once without stretching your account balance too thin across multiple open positions.
Margin is the amount of your own capital required to open and maintain a leveraged position — it acts as collateral for the borrowed portion of your trade.
Required Margin = Position Size ÷ Leverage. Higher leverage means less margin is needed to open the same size position.
If losses eat into your available margin below a maintenance threshold, you risk a margin call or automatic liquidation of your position.
No — leverage is the multiplier (like 10x), while margin is the actual dollar amount of collateral required to support that leveraged position.
Yes, different assets and different brokers set different maximum leverage limits, which directly changes the margin required for the same position size.
